Antoine and Pierre go to the main offices of Ohio National Bank in Akron to meet with William Perkins. When Perkins was the manager of Akron Commercial and Agricultural Bank, he had convinced Pierre to keep his money in Akron Commercial even though there were rumors that the bank was in danger of collapse.

When Akron Commercial went bust, Ohio National bank bought the remaining assets of Akron Commercial; Ohio National hired Perkins to help administer the bankruptcy proceedings. By court decree the depositors were to get about ten cents on the dollar for their bank holdings.

Perkins keeps Antoine and Pierre waiting well past the time of their appointment which incenses Pierre. When Perkins finally brings them into the office, he tells them that the money the bank owes them will go into Bank of Ohio accounts. The accounts will not be funded until January 1st, and they will not have access to the savings account until 90 days after that. In other words, they will not have access to money they desperately need for another five months.
